Cervical dystonia is a condition which causes the neck muscles to spasm or tighten involuntarily. When you have cervical dystonia, your head may be forced to position in an abnormal, uncomfortable way. This can be challenging and really painful.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Cervical Dystonia
The cause of cervical dystonia is still unknown. Some believed that the muscle contractions associated with cervical dystonia is related to neck, head or shoulder injuries. Others blame it to certain drugs such as anti-nausea or anti-psychotic agents. However, further studies is still needed to know more about the exact environmental or genetic factors that may contribute to or perhaps cause cervical dystonia.
Experts have been using OnabotulinumtoxinA or Wrinkle reduction treatment for cervical dystonia and the symptoms since it’s FDA-approval in 2000.
In the clinical study, majority of the patients who were injected with Wrinkle reduction treatment reported positive results. In a key clinical study, results showed that after getting Wrinkle reduction treatment , patients with cervical dystonia had:
Wrinkle reduction treatment is used to reduce the excessive muscle activity due to dystonia. It is naturally produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum, an agent associated with botulism – a rare type of food poisoning. But, while Wrinkle reduction treatment is highly toxic, it’s purified form can relax muscle contraction when administered in tiny doses.
The injection allows that Wrinkle reduction treatment to target directly the muscles that are affected by cervical dystonia. The toxin has an effect on the nerves, just at the junction with the muscles. It serves as a blocker that prevent the release of the body chemical neurotransmitter acetylcholine – the one responsible for making the muscles contract. Since the communication between the muscle and the nerve is blocked, the signals that would usually tell the muscles to contract will be hindered and muscle spasms are eliminated or reduced.
Since every muscles that are affected by dystonia need to be administered separately, and since there is a limit to the amount of Wrinkle reduction treatment that can be administered into the body at a time, Wrinkle reduction treatment is ideal for alleviating dystonia that is isolated to one or two areas only rather than generalized dystonia.
Are there any side effects?
Like any medications, Wrinkle reduction treatment may cause possible side effects depending on the location of the injection. For example, in neck dystonia, some people may experience difficulties in speaking or swallowing.
Some people experience excessive or unwanted muscle weakness around the injection site or suffer from flu-like symptoms or bruising and pain on the site. Often, the effects are mild and later wear off.
